udev Overview for Newbies - Paramahansa Polo

Abstract

The talk is oriented to newbies to linux. The talk will cover a short overview on the old and good static /dev, devfs and a not so short overview on udev (dynamic /dev).

The goals of the udev project are:

To provide these features, udev is developed in three separate projects: namedev, libsysfs and, of course, udev. Thus, the talk will also give an overview on sysfs and namedev. Also, how udev works to assign persistent names. Writing rules and some examples. What is hotplug, hal, and dbus.

And last, how hotplug, hal&dbus, sysfs and udev fit together. The talk will be based on kernel 2.6.12 or newer.
