Work either via vector distance (how far each other router is from me) or via link status (which are my neighbour routers to which i have a working link right now).

Now-a-days divided into External Gateway Protocols (EGPs) and Interior Gateway Protocols (IGPs) reflecting administrative ownership of routers and networks.
