Interlude

At this point in time, roughly a week after we started working on this
problem, we managed to get a replacement modem from Bezeq, one that
actually works with linux "out of the box".

However, our work is not done yet. 

In the course of our struggles to understand and solve the problem, I
wrote patches for pptp, and updated the HOWTO, according to our 
findings. This was done in full collaboration and cooperation with the
original author (Dani Arbel), in the spirit of open source
development.
